Open clusters come in all shapes and sizes. Instead of the relative uniformity of a globular, they are all over the map. Some may be roughly round, some square, some with no discernable shape. They also come in a variety of star colors as well as highly mixed magnitudes. As Roger says, many of them are not as bright as one might expect. On the other hand, even some of the bright ones get lost in the glow of the milky way. The especially difficult ones are located in Monoceros and Canis Major. Not only are they buried in a relatively rich star field, many of them are just a clump of 15 or 20 dim stars. They are the ones that often have no discernable shape and that is why many of them are part of the Herschel catalogues.
Fun objects.
All,

I really want to be able to sketch the small and rich cluster NGC 1893. Skiff and Luginbulh mention 30 faint stars with a 60 mm refractor and 50 with a 10-inch. The demension's of this small and faint cluster, 12 arc minutes.

12/60 = is 0.20°

A cluster like this can be a beautiful sight and may cause you to want to see more with faint stars. I have observed many like this. The faint members will be invisible, but with the right EP and magnification, they will just "pop" into view.

We normally think of open clusters as being very bright, an example M37, M36, and M38 or M45...not true.

I think that we will still have enough time to see this object, as it will be visible immediately, 1.5 hours after sunset.

Roger

Roger

I don't mind if we do an extension until next month, but as Roger said, it will get lower and lower by our next observing window. I'm going to try for it regardless, but if we want to keep the challenges in line, we can just go with the one success we already have and leave it alone.

What we can do is delay it and put it out next month as well as the April challenge. I'm sure some of us have to bunch up observations when they can anyway, and it is no sweat from me to do two reports in one month.

Fred

Did everyone get observe this month's challenge object? I only got one mediocre night and not sure that my images are very good. I'll have to give them a look after Chuch this afternoon. Let me know if we want to give folks an extension for a couple of weeks.
