When you are working on the Messier marathon, please consider the two faint galaxies located within the same FOV as "spurious" M-40.

We all know M-40 is a rather insignificant pair of wide magnitude 9 stars with a separation of about 49" seconds.

If you have time...please look for the two faint galaxies identified as NGC-4290 and NGC-4284.

NGC-4290 at mag 12.6 makes a right triangle with 6th-magnitude 70 Ursae Majoris and M-40. This galaxy can be seen rather easily with my 10-inch.

NGC-4284 will be a test. It is listed at 14.7 magnitude. This is my second faintest galaxy to see with my 10-inch from my moderately light polluted backyard. NGC-4284 making a triangle with two very faint stars at the far lower left of the attached sketch.

Tom English and I spent a lot of time on these galaxies one spring many years ago(possibly 1993 or 1994, I have the record, just don't want to locate at the moment).

I actually presented Tom with his own sketch from that night only a few weeks ago.

NGC-4284 was fleeting in my 10-inch and averted vision was required, but we could not see it with GWU's orange tube C-8 SC scope.

I would sure like for you to share a note or two if you can see both of these faint galaxies. The last time I observed N-4284 and N-4290 was in the Spring of 2000.

I could still see NGC-4284.
