Wow...wish that I had my old 6-inch Criterion Dynascope back also. Jim Dire sez the same thing, and he was/is a true research astronomer.

The 12.5-inch is a Criterion scope. I think this is the largest scope that Criterion of Connecticut ever made...I stand to be corrected on this.

I sent an e-mail last year about this telescope. A small amount of information. Ted Komorowski the scope. He moved to Charlotte in the late or early 60's. He was one the first in this area to start taking pictures with a 35mm SLR film camera during that period.

He was using an old Norton's Sky Atlas one night and observed what he thought to be a "new" comet beside Beta Andromeda. Norton's did not show anything beside Beta Andromeda.

This was actually NGC-404. He sent a telegram to the proper folks to report his find...only to be terribly disappointed shortly there after. NGC-404 has been referred to as "Komorowski's Comet" in many deep-sky observers guides.

He regularly corresponded with Walter Scott Houston of S&T during the 60's. WSH wrote a monthly column "Deep-sky Wonders" for 46 consecutive years. It is now written by Sue French. On many occasions WSH wrote or referenced Ted Komorowski in many of his monthly columns.

Ted was later shot and killed by his girlfriend. No one seems to know the full details of this event.

I also noticed that Dr. Olive sent an old e-mail concerning my fight with a local newspaper concerning light pollution and suggestions. We lost...

All,

Just wanted to share this with the members of the LVAS. I just received this e-mail from Dr. Don Olive.

The famous Komorowski scope will now belong to the Cleveland County Astronomical Society. There are just a few members so I have got to figure out how I can transport this (Monster) scope and make full use of it.

The mirror's in this scope were recently re-coated. Some of the expert mirror makers in the Charlotte Amateurs tested the primary and said that they had never seen a mirror so good.

roger
