90K for a 16" scope? It had better be made out of solid gold at that price!
Fred,

Hopefully when I come back to Las Vegas someone will have one of the 50 inchers. Most observers from North Carolina are far too poor to spend $125,000 for a scope.

It is interesting to note that the new Ritchey Chretien scope that has been donated to GWU for the Williams Observatory was nearly $90,000 (complete) with all drives and electronics, etc. We mounted it onto the pier about a month ago.

It was donated by a local Medical Doctor and it is only a 16-inch scope.

roger

Somebody around here is going to have to get one of those Orion monster dobs so they can see it visually. Yeah, right!

Fred

Rob,

The February object and supplemental are excellent selections, with plenty of fine detail to be observed, drawn out, and imaged.

I will see all of the guys on the distribution for this area on Saturday. We will be having our annual "Regional Gathering of Amateur Astronomers" at GWU, here in Boiling Springs. There will be several astronomical vendors from as far away as New York with loads of astronomical equipment. I think this will be the 17th event...time sure does get away.

Normally there will be amateurs attending from about five southeastern states.

The Las Vegas Astronomical Society and the Observers Challenge will be discussed during the event.

Rob, my sketch of the the Cone Nebula does not look anything like your Mallincam image or the work of David Blanchette, and Jim Dire.

As for the ones that have observed this object before I think we can all agree the Cone is a photographic object for sure. Visually the cone will appear as nothing more than a slight nebulosity without shape in "most" scopes.

I look forward to the February objects...

roger

The moon and stars to govern the night.....
