It is surprising but the open cluster NGC-188 (const. Cepheus) was much more difficult for me than PN IC-1747. As I mentioned earlier N-188 is very close to polaris...approximately 4.5° or so. I had to use almost 200x to see IC 1747 and actually went to 250x for more detail. It is fairly well concentrated. I could also see the very faint central star. It look several nights to see this star.<BR>

My sketch of N-188 looks very similar to Jim's image of IC 10. Just a faint brightness. However Skiff and Lunginbuhl could see it with a 60 mm refractor (2.4-inches). According to some infromation N-188 is one of the oldest known star clusters. <BR>

Back to IC 10...like Rob, I am going to attempt IC 10 at my next session. <BR>

Roger,<BR> <BR>Never seen NGC-188 and after seeing a photo of it I can understand why. A pretty vague cluster. As for IC-1747, it is the planetary I was thinking of in Casseopeia. I've tried at least five time to nail it and haven't yet. It's already on my list.<BR> <BR>Fred<BR><BR> <BR>

Fred and all,<BR> <BR>Re: IC 10<BR> <BR>I missed a good opportunity last night to look for this object...just had something to come up at the last minute. It was a bit cold (20's) and somewhat breezy but the transparency was excellent. I may have a small window tonight. A front will be coming in on Saturday with the possibility of some light snow and freezing rain on Saturday.<BR> <BR>I was just looking at an atlas and thought about a couple more objects in the far N that was difficult for me. It was a good feeling when I finally saw them.<BR> <BR>1. IC 1747 PN in Cas 13.5 M with a very faint central star...I came in smiling that night back in the early 90's. <BR> <BR>2. NGC 188 OC, just a few degrees from Polaris. It took me several nights of spending an hour or more each time. I would just give up and go to other things...finally all things were right and there it was. This was almost 20 years ago but I can remember it as well as if it were yesterday. Roger and all,<BR> <BR>I saw it for the first time that last night at Redstone on 21 November.<BR> <BR>It was just a faint glow against the background and now I know why I missed it. After seeing it described by a few other visual observers, I kind of knew what to look for. The last time I tried was I think at Cathedral Gorge and again at Death Valley and never saw it. I was looking for a faint fuzzy oval that was not very big. However, IC-10 was just a medium-sized faint glow that looked more like a distant open cluster. Though it was a thrill to finally find it, it was dramatially unimpressive to look at!<BR> <BR>Fred<BR><BR> <BR>
