Our "Observers Challenge" for June will be M-13. We will be looking for the illusive "propeller" within M-13. I have only read of two observers seeing the three dark rifts radiating out from the center. See my sketch of Lord Rosse's sketch of 1850.<BR>

WSH brought this up in an article of "Deep-Sky Wonder's" in 1953. <BR>

We wil add another "field" with two very faint objects. We will first locate, spurious M-40 and look for the "very faint NGC-4290 and the even fainter NGC-4284 at 14.7 magnitude. I have actually viewed both of these galaxies from my backyard with my 10-inch...see sketch. The challenge will be to just see both of these very faint galaxies. I actually have notes on both.<BR>

<STRONG>On April 3rd 1994, Tom English and I observed both galaxies from my backyard. We could easily see NGC-4290 with the GWU orange tube Celestron C-8, but we could not see the 14.7 mag. NGC-4284. </STRONG><BR>
<STRONG></STRONG> <BR>
<STRONG>We could see both with my 10-inch reflector. Averted vision was required to glimpse the fainter NGC-4284, but we could not hold it constantly. We observed that night from 11:00 PM till 3:30 AM local time. </STRONG><BR>
