Jim Gianoulakis,

I just talked with my son and he said that the skies were clear in LV earlier, but with very high winds.

The moon has little effect on the imaging of stars and I have done some of my finest double and multiple star work with an 80% moon. It has little effect on visual observing unless the stars are at the limit of the telescope being used.

If you have the opportunity to do this work it would be most appreciated. I know that you have a home observatory and it would be relatively easy for you to observe...conditions allowing. I would like to have something for S&T by Monday AM if at all possible.

If you should be available for this work...would you send me your image asap. Please be sure to write on the e-mail that you are giving S&T permission to use your image in any way that they see fitting. Your name will always be included in stuff like this. Be sure to note your scope and all other "imaging" information of importance for Dennis to use.

You could very well be the first to present a "modern image" by an amateur of the Virgo Diamond. Good things could become of this.

Let me know? I will be out tonight if weather permits.

Best regards, Roger

I hope you are able to read this file. It is a word file. I annotated the galaxies I could identify but may have missed some.

If you image, please do as Jim has done. Carefully examine your image and write some notes. This will improve your observing skills and allow you to see fine details that you may have overlooked. Again Jim, good job and thanks for sharing.

I should have asked you for permission but there are plenty of amateurs admiring your excellent work as of this moment...8:41 AM local EDT.

Re: Galaxy classifications. This would be a great job for someone who does not do a great deal of observing, but would like to contribute and be recognized for your efforts. We will all learn something from "your research".

Best regards, and thanks again...Roger Ivester

I can see how it might be possible for a man to look down upon the earth and be an atheist, but I cannot conceive how he could look up into the heavens and say there is no God. If I hadn't known it was there, I would have missed it. In fact, several other people looked at the group and only counted 8. I don't feel bad missing it so many times before!

I used a 26mm Q-70 eyepiece from Orion. It has a 70 degree field, and despite a fishbowl effect at the edges, I had no problem seeing even the galaxies at the edges. Of course, I moved around a bit to catch each one in the center of the field, but to satisfy the observing challenge, I DID see all 9 at once in the field.

All of the galaxies, even M-84 and M-86 were featureless. No mottling or any detail at all, but they were all definite faint fuzzies and all had distinct shapes. The most fascinating of the group, to me, was NGC-4388, an edge-on spiral. It was a nice, though faint large streak, and out sized and outclassed the similar NGC-4402.

This is the stuff I live for! Seeing nine galaxies at once, and being able to positively identify every one of them is a real thrill.

Attached is my requisite crummy drawing, but it should give you an idea of what you will see if you have enough aperture.

Fred
