Roger,
The Q-70's have the fishbowl effect. The stars are comets at the edges. However, I generally look through the sweet spot anyway, so the flared stars at the edge don't bother me. At least there are only 5 elements instead of 8 or 9.

I recently got to try out that Ethos 17mm, and to tell the truth, I wasn't impressed at all. Sure, it had a flat field all the way to the extreme edge, but that monster sucked up a lot of light. I don't care what anyone says, the Ethos, and in fact, most Naglers, are just not worth the exorbiant cost. For $750 I was at least expecting to have a much larger sweet spot at the eye lens. Instead, I had to roll my eye around to find it. The 100 degree field was so wide, I got a headache trying to keep my left eye closed.

It was okay for star clusters, but for the nebulas and galaxies I looked at, it sucked the fuzz right out of them.

A Q-70 has a pretty nice sweet spot in the middle third of the field, which is fine with me. No, it probalby wouldn't show all nine galaxies the way they should be seen, but I would center each one anyway rather than try to glimpse it along the edge.

I've been a little bit interested in the new Nagler type 5 20mm. It supposedly has only 6 elements, which may work for me. However, it's $450 which is way too much for an eyepiece.
Fred,

You did tell me that you had the complete set of Q70 eyepieces from Orion...correct?
Is the field flat...what about the stars at the edge? An f/4.5 telescope will really tax any wide field eyepiece.

At a dark site all nine galaxies of the Virgo cluster should be easily framed and seen with your 16-inch Lightbridge. Most should be fairly bright...

I would like to observe this cluster with your 16-inch...sketching again and compare the difference versus my 10-inch.

When I used to look at those big robust Cave reflectors during the 60's and early 70's I thought that a 10-inch scope was the "biggest" scope an amateur could ever have.

John, what kind of 10-inch Maksutov do you have, brand, etc? Maksutov-Cassegrain? I presume it is equatorially mounted? What was the Tele-vue eyepiece that you was using?

Roger

I can see how it might be possible for a man to look down upon the earth and be an atheist, but I cannot conceive how he could look up into the heavens and say there is no God.
