I was able to do a quick sketch of Lulin early this morning and just wanted to share. I set up in my backyard, observed, and sketched the comet at approximately 1:00 AM EST. It was in the corner of Virgo and fairly close to Beta. It was approximately 8° SE of Saturn.

I didn't have time to pinpoint on my star atlas as I realized a cloud bank was closing rapidly from the west. I glanced at my manual setting circles and the coordinates were approximately as following:

RA - 11h 52m Declination - +04.5°

The comet was very high in the sky and I did not have time to gain a precise magnitude estimate. It was pretty bright and easy to see even through my 7x50 finder scope using a 20mm Erfle eyepiece a 9° FOV.

I observed for two hours and used all eyepiece combinations with my 10-inch reflector. The best view was gained using an older 16mm University Optics Konig @ 71x, FOV 0.92°.

Even though I spent at least two hours it was if I was there for only 15 minutes. I was frantically trying to get all my stuff together before the clouds would soon cover the entire sky. The temperature was 21° and I was dressed warmly.

North is up on the sketch...

Roger
