Jim,

As I mentioned earlier I got mine for $42 "total". Yep, everyone should own one. Sometimes I just like to go out into my backyard without a scope and just admire the beauty of the sky. Having a scope this small allows me to check out the Auriga Clusters, and too many other bright clusters to list. It worked extremely well on M-41...almost showing the color in the Espin Star.

Jim, it is amazing but I could see three trapezium stars rather easily and during moments of calm, could see all four.

Using my 24 mm Konig it presented an excellent view of the entire M-45 cluster. The moon looked very nice also. Good EP's are essential for the performance of this scope.

I will not be able to set up my 1regular scopes tonight due to things going on. However, I will have about an hour and have already made my agenda for the Messiers that I want to look at through this tiny scope. I will take notes and maybe do a sketch or two.

Again, it is a well built 76 mm scope that can be purchased at some locations for less than $50. It works extremly well, but does not perform like an 80 mm APO refractor, in some cases costing nearly $2,000.

I was just thinking that at $44 it would be hard to go wrong.

Jim,

It is so good to hear from you, it has been a while. Thanks for coming to my defense regarding the Celestron FirstScope.

Fred, sent me an e-mail earlier. He looked at one in Fry's and said that it was even to small for a kid. However, I am going to show him the possiblities. When he looks at one of my sketches on the Observers Challenge he will be surprised. The sketch might show the spiral arm connecting both M-51 and the companion, and also spiral structure.

Well...this might not be possible...yea, for sure. However, I am going draw what I see. I plan on using my 10-inch in conjunction. I will have notes, a sketch and a picture of this little scope, complete with a Rigel Quik Finder, (which cost almost as much a the scope) a good EP plus a barlow. With a 300 FL, a barlow works well and helps to improve the star images.

After this Fred will not call it a "punky" little scope. He will be rushing out to Fry's to get him one before they sell out.

It so cute and pretty I just enjoy leaving it out to look at. Again comestics, quality are excellent, and the focuser works great. The best eco focuser that I have ever felt!

I must admit it does not have pinpoint star images across the field like my 4-inch refractor.

This starter scope has gotten a lot of positive press.

One more thing, the 100mm has a true parabolic f/4 mirror, rather than an f/4 spherical in the 76 Celestron. A huge difference.

Subject: [LVAS] 100mm Table Top Reflector Question?

All,

I had sent an e-mail earlier saying that I wanted to get my nine year old granddaughter a 76mm Celestron FirstScope. Since that time I have noticed that Orion has a 100mm "SkyScanner 100mm Table Top Reflector for $100 dollars. Looks like the same Chinese factory makes both scopes.

It is not much larger in size, better EP's, and a red dot finder. It has a spider holding the secondary, rather than a single stalk attached to the focuser. The price is only $50 dollars more.

I would have to get a finder for the Celestron, so that is extra money added to the initial cost of the 76mm.

I am hoping that maybe a better scope might also inspire my son Brad to start doing a bit of observing.

Question: Has anyone every seen or had any experience with this scope? I know that it is not going to work as well as my 4-inch refractor, but I do believe all the messiers and more would be possible with this scope.

I know that I could buy a tried and proven "StarBlast", but that is another $100 dollars. If I could be for sure that the scope was going to be well used, I would get the "StarBlast". The "SB" might also be too big for Zoe to handle.

Thanks, Roger
