Roger,
I've noticed that red star in M-41 before. When I think of red stars though, I think of Beetle Juice (yeah, I know that's not the correct spelling). Also Antares. A lot of stars look pretty bland, color-wise, but the red ones really stand out. I'm starting to pay a bit more attention to star color nowadays.

Subject: [Lvas] Red Stars ??
LVAS all,
Does anyone ever look at red stars (carbon stars)? How about the red star known as the Espin star in M-41? If you have not observed this cluster in a while, please observe and see this one red star "smack" in the middle. M-41 is heading toward the west, get it before its too low.
Also go to "Frank Barretts Celestial Wonders" and look at his image of the double cluster. The first thing I do when observing open clusters is to sketch and count the red stars. It's pretty interesting ... really.
Tom English and Jim Mullaney got me into this most unique part of our beloved hobby. If you are interested I can give you an entire list that will very well surprise you with their beauty.
