Thank you for your invitation. I would have like to have join you, but it is along ways for me to travel to Temple Bar. If I had a little more notice I could have made arrangements to stay over nite at the motel. Maybe next time.

May you have clear skies. Phil Krumpos

If anyone on this mailing list who is not observing the occultation by themselves would like to join us in a Friday observing session, you are welcome to come meet me and Roy Hanson at the Boat Launch Parking Lot at the Temple Bar Marina. For directions, you can go to google maps and put in these coordinates and input your address 36° 02' 16.97"N, 114°19'10.08"W. We have four propane heaters that we plan to bring as well as my 10" f/6 Dobsonian, Roy's 22" Webster Dobsonian, and his 12" Meade SCT. It would be great if we can have more people join this group if you are not going to Valley of Fire or Overton to track the asteroid occultation. I feel that it would be quite a bit safer if more people can observe along with us, though it would also be better if you are able to get the asteroid occultation data at another viewing site north of the nellis air force base.

Just wanted to invite you and let you know.

In addition, my friends have been asking me to make us a campfire at the astrochannels star party at Tecopa Hot Springs on January 12 at 6:00pm. So if anyone at the Redrock New Scope Clinic on that evening would like to view what we are viewing via mobile internet or show the public the objects, you can register for an account at www.astrochannels.com. They haven't updated that website yet but here is some news on Astrochannels:

Expect a pleasing view of M42, the Eskimo, and more than twenty protostars in the Horsehead Nebula.

I wish you guys a very enjoyable time at the Redrock Public Star Party and New Scope Clinic at 5pm on January 12. Clear skies.

  Thanks,
  Martin Hilario

    Rob,

I sent an email to Paul detailing my observing location at:
Temple Bar Boat Launch Parking Lot, Arizona 36° 02'16.97"N, 114°19'10.08"W 1203ft.
which is located between the green and southern blue lines on the Occult V4 map.

Good luck to you all at Redstone, too. I'm sure it will be perfect for your viewing of the occultation, especially if you park on the northwest end of the island in the middle of the parking lot so that you have a clear view of Leo rising at 29 degrees in the east (alt.~2245ft). Also that petrified sand dune behind you blocks out most of the 60-degree las vegas light dome and the approaching car headlights. I had intended to observe there at first, but my location at Temple Bar to the southeast will give me good data also.

    Thanks,
    Martin Hilario

P.S. Speaking of asteroids, 2007 WD5 is not predicted to hit Mars on Jan. 30:

      Martin,

Do you have a lat/long for the position from which you will be observing? Paul Maley needs to know the exact location.

Also, what is your direct email. Paul may want to contact you concerning the occultation.

      Thanks,
